Locating Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) different ward offices, hospitals, kiosk centres, gardens, sports grounds, auditoriums and attached offices has become much easier now. Making best use of Google map technology, the civic body has developed online tool that enables citizens hassle-free process of locating PMC controlled establishments.
Available on PMC website, the tool has around 12 distinct icons that helps citizens find desired places. The tool also helps in locating nearest fire-brigade stations, important PMC offices and even sight-seeing places. “Despite details addresses of each and every establishments available, citizens often face difficulties in finding them. Since Internet has reached almost every home these days, we thought of making use of the technology to help people in this matter,” said Rahul Tathawade, IT support executive at PMC told Newsline, on Tuesday.
“We customised Google map by feeding data about longitude and latitude of different PMC establishments. The public link of each location was created thereafter. We prepared special legends in keeping with characteristics of each establishment for easy identification. The online tool developed by us can be also accessed on Android-operated mobile phones,” he added. Renuka Ratnaparkhe, a teacher, said she found online tool developed by PMC for locating different establishments user-friendly. “The attractive legends used in tool help in locating desired address very easily,” she said. Ameya Gumaste, an engineering professional, appreciated PMC move to customize freely available global web mapping service application like Google map for benefit of citizens. Civic activist Vivek Velankar said the online tool would helpful for those who are relatively new to geography of Pune. “The city witnesses heady flow of tourists on regular basis, and they would be also benefited from the PMC initiative. The civic body should keep on developing such small e-governance measures that could benefit public in larger manner,” he said.
