DAVE Massingham has some useful tips for small businesses keen to improve – or enter into the world of – Search Engine Optimisation. SEO is the art of getting your website as close as possible to the top of internet search results. If you are a bakery in Maroochydore, you want to be found quickly and easily if someone types “Maroochydore bakery” into Google. It can be a confusing, complex space and many are so daunted, they outsource the task, opening themselves up to exploitation from the rogues in the industry. Dave Massingham has been running his Massingham Marketing business for the past five years, specialising in helping Sunshine Coast small business with SEO. He works with gyms, accountants, plumbers and massage therapists. “I get a buzz out of getting clients onto the front page of Google and getting them good rankings,” he said. He said if businesses were being charged $1000 a month for SEO work, they were being ripped off. His services start at $197 a month. “I try to be affordable and I have recognised my market,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there who don’t have the budget to spend $1000 a month on marketing. “I look at each client individually; so if they have a $500 a month marketing budget, I won’t take all of it, but I will rank their website, give them feedback and knowledge.
“This can be very affordable for most businesses. And because we live on the Sunshine Coast, we live in a very small, selective market. “There’s only going to be a certain number of people looking for a vegetarian cafe in Maroochydore, for example. And that’s a good thing for business.” So, what is the trick to getting SEO right? “One of the big tricks is to have special localised keywords in their title tags on their website. “And make sure you have chosen a keyword with the H1 tag, that is a heading one tag. It helps your website rank in search engines. “And these days, having a link to an authority site within your content also helps your website rank. “Locally, it could be linking to an article posted by the Sunshine Coast Daily. That helps because it is an authority site everyone loves looking at and everyone reads to find out about what’s happening in the local area. “Other authority sites are government and education sites, and Wikipedia.”
But don’t try setting up your own Wikipedia page and linking back. “That sort of stuff is called black hatting, like a magician’s black hat – it is hidden, under the table. “At the end of the day, Google will see everything and you will be penalised.” Dave Massignham says video is where it’s at online. A good YouTube video and a good keyword can get you sitting at number two or three in Google within 15 minutes. “YouTube has been signing up American TV networks like NBC and CNN. In the next five or 10 years, everything will be streaming online. “TV will be live on computers and in 30 years, I think the TV market will be a dying industry.”
