Google And Samsung Sign 10 Year Global Patent License Agreement

Samsung Electronics Co. says it has signed an agreement with Google Inc. to cross-license their patents. The Asian tech heavyweight said Monday the deal covers patents to be filed over the next 10 years as well as existing patents. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Allen Lo, a deputy general counsel at Google, said the deal allows the two to reduce the potential for litigation and focus on innovation.

Samsung said it also paves the way for deeper collaboration on research and development for Samsung and Google. The two already collaborate on smartphones and televisions. Tech companies often use litigation to stop rivals from using patents without permission but many of the disputes end in cross-licensing agreements outside court. Alcatel-Lucent and BT claim it’s fastest ever internet speed achieved on commercial-grade hardware, reports the Wall Street Journal. The field trial, conducted over an existing 410km fibre link between the BT Tower in London and BT’s Adastral Park research campus in Suffolk, reached speeds of 1.4 terabits per second. Australia has an average internet download speed of 4.8 megabits per second, according to Akamai’s state of the internet report — about 300,000 times slower than Alcatel-Lucent and BT’s connection.

Faster internet speeds have been measured in labs, but the latest trial is the first time such a fast connection has been achieved using “real world” conditions. The trial used a new “flexible grid” infrastructure to vary the gaps between transmission channels, which allowed more efficient data transmission.Kevin Drury, optical marketing leader at Alcatel-Lucent, told BBC News that the new development was akin to reducing the spaces between lanes on a busy highway, enabling more lanes of traffic to share the same space. He said data-heavy transfers such as streaming video would travel in wide lanes, while narrow lanes would be assigned low-data transfers such as standard web pages.

Windows 8 has been a failure in many ways, prompting some people to compare it to the utter disaster of Vista. While it may not be as bad, the OS has been less than satisfactory for many users, forcing them to re-install Windows 7. HP is now promoting the old operating system as well, insisting that as a result of “popular demand” it is including Windows 7 on some of its computers. Considering that the OS is nearly five years old, HP must be seeing a large amount of customers interested in buying a new Windows 7 machine for it to be worth the switch. Windows 8.1 has fixed some of the issues present in the original version of the new OS, but in many ways, Windows 7 is still superior. With reports suggesting that Microsoft will be coming out with Windows 9 as early as next year, it is obvious that the decision to move towards the touch-based Metro UI was not a good idea and led to many of the problems found with Windows 8 and 8.1.

According to a press release, HP will allow customers to order computers with either the Home or Pro versions of the older operating system. Ever since the early days of Windows, new versions of the OS have always been hit or miss. The vast majority of people who made the switch from XP to Vista absolutely hated the change and due to outcry for consumers, Microsoft extended support for XP in case people wanted to use the older OS as well. Although this situation is different in that some customers genuinely prefer Windows 8, it is easy to tell that Windows 7 has continued to be one of the most stable versions of the platform. Windows 7 will continue to see regular support from Microsoft until sometime in January 2015, with extended and limited support continuing on until 2020.

Summary: HP has announced that it will begin shipping devices with Windows 7 Home and Pro for customers interested in using the older OS rather than Windows 8/8.1. According to HP, the decision to offer Windows 7 machines came from “popular demand”, something that makes sense considering the negative reviews of Windows 8.

What is SEO? – Search engine optimisation or SEO refers to the process of improving the position that your website appears at in the “organic” search results returned by sites such as Google. As a general rule of thumb, sites that appear higher up in the results will get more traffic to their pages, and so potentially more business. Your goal is to get to page one and ideally to position one, but whether that is feasible largely depends on the market that you are operating in. If you’re in the mobile phone space or travel, you’ll be fighting a losing battle unless you’ve got a sizeable budget to spend. However, if you’re offering a niche product or a service in a defined geographical area, you stand a pretty good chance of at least getting to page one if you are patient and follow these basic principles.

Keyword rich content

One of the key tools that search providers such as Google and Microsoft (Bing) employ to determine your rankings are “spiders”. A spider is piece of software that crawls the web in a methodical, automated manner. They browse your website (and everyone else’s) to identify the actual copy written on the page along with things like use of key words and phrases. This data is then used to determine the relevance of your site when someone enters a keyword or phrase into Google, Bing or any other search engine. With this in mind, you need to consider the search habits of your target audience, and ensure that the terms they might use to find your business are reflected on your pages. For example, if you offer physiotherapy services, your website content should include words or phrases that people may search for, such as “massage”, or specific problems such as “lower back pain”. Remember that text included in images cannot be crawled by spiders, although alternative text associated with the images is, so you may wish to revisit the design of some of your pages.

A useful free tool for identifying your keywords is the Google AdWords keyword tool. This is designed to help prospective advertisers identify the most relevant keywords for their chosen market, but it is also very helpful when writing copy for your website. Once you have identified your keywords, ensure that they appear in the body of your pages, as well as in the metadata of your page, which is the unseen data that gives the spiders key information about your page. This can either be done by yourself, with a little knowledge of HTML and access to your server, or it can be done by your web designer.

PageRank is a number scored out of 10 that is given to your website based on inbound and outbound links, and helps search engines to verify how trustworthy your site is. Linking between sites allows “link juice” to be carried through, so if your site is linked to by a site with a good PageRank, link juice will be carried forward to your site, improving your ranking. While you cannot generally control the inbound links to your site (and Google disapproves of link farms and other artificial ways of linking), there are some steps that can be taken to improve your PageRank score. Ensure that your site is linked to from your social media content, most notably Google+, and attempt to get listed on free open directories such as DMOZ or professional bodies associated with your market.

Both outbound and internal links are crucial. Wherever you mention a site or a source, make sure these include a reference and a hyperlink. As for internal links, meticulously linking will increase the time spent on your site by the spiders. You may wish to revisit your menu structure, or to insert a quick links footer, which will ensure that each page on your site has a link to all the other pages on it. In order to determine the PageRank of your site, you can download a browser plugin such as PageRank Status for the Google Chrome browser.

Keep it fresh

The rate at which search engine spiders crawl your site is in part determined by how frequently the content of your pages change. With this in mind, you may want to create a monthly task to change text, images, or add or remove pages, in order to ensure that your content is regularly updated. Alternatively, set up a blog on your site and allocate time each day (or week) to write or curate some content that is relevant to your target market. This might seem onerous or daunting, but once you get into the habit it becomes second nature and shouldn’t take more than about half an hour a day. For reference material – which should always be credited – use Google Alerts to keep up to date with online content that matches your keywords.

Keeping up to date with SEO

The algorithms used by Google and Microsoft to determine the order of their results are subject to tweaks and improvements as they attempt to deliver ever more accurate search results. As a result, SEO is something of a moving feast and it pays to stay up to date. That said, these basic principles are unlikely to change significantly as they are key determinants of your ranking.

Content marketing

Content marketing is all the rage in the digital marketing space now. Of course, many of us ALWAYS focused on creating high quality content on a consistent basis and Google is now giving us our rewards for refusing to play backlinking, keyword stuffing, and otherwise gaming the search system. That’s because we knew high quality (valuable) content converts and, what is traffic if it doesn’t convert? For those of you new to the content marketing game, check out my new content marketing ebook for some pointers. Google’s Hummingbird algorithm update was the final nail in the coffin for questionable SEO and new rumors that Google is reducing (or eliminating) the impact of backlinks creates the necessity for better content marketing strategies. Storytelling, video, and other content tools for driving emotional engagement are critically important for success in digital marketing.


Big data is a phenomenon unique to digital marketing, since traditional marketing suffered a distinct LACK of data. But, are we better off for having so MUCH data? Most experts agree: No!. Instead of helping, big data ensures we waste valuable time trying to make sense (and better decisions) from all that mess — BTW, take a look at my Four-Factor Model for generating actionable insights from big data. Despite problems, having data is better than having no data, so analytics are a big part of what’s changing in digital marketing.


We’ve said this for years, but mobile is now a BIG part of digital marketing success. Not only is responsive design a must for websites — destroying the model of having 2 different websites — but mobile apps are both more ubiquitous and resonate better with users. Think UX (user experience) and gamefication in your app development.


Social media was never free — hiring folks (or agencies) with the right skills was always expensive. But, now platforms are maturing and need revenue streams ie. ads. Facebook ads will likely be de rigour in the near future if brands want to show up. BTW, we’ve always suspected Adwords impacted Google search results and my own experience suggests a strong correlation between Adwords spending and search results. As a result, I’ve added Adwords as a service offering and several team members are well on their way toward Adwords certification to supplement our existing Analytics certification.

Social retail

The line between online and offline retail was never clear and is blurring even further. Smart stores offer coupons through mobile devices (and mobile apps) so customers can simply swipe their device rather than bother with clipping coupons. Retail stores now feature kiosk allowing customers to order online from the store, QR codes to discover more about the products they’re seeing, and apps like Shopkick to incentivize customers in the store. What’s needed is better WIFI within the store and enhanced apps to allow customers to consult friends for opinions prior to making purchases.

SEO, like many things in life, can be really good or really bad, depending on who’s doing it. Unfortunately, there are too many people claiming to be SEO professionals who don’t seem to know much beyond the basics, and in many cases are nothing more than middle-men who just outsource the actual fulfillment to places like Fiverr, or “SEO teams” in India (where, in my experience, SEO skills tend to be at least 3-5 years behind the curve). For many business owners, their website is a critical revenue stream. With that in mind, why would anyone trust such an important asset to people who A. don’t know what they’re doing, and/or B. engage in tactics that are knowingly risky? In most cases, it’s because they just don’t know any better.When it comes to SEO, it can be difficult for the average person to determine if the person they’re talking to actually knows what they’re doing, making it really easy to end up with a self-proclaimed SEO “professional” who talks the talk, but just can’t walk the walk. Case in point: Rap Genius. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, expect a good SEO audit to range from $2,500 to $20,000, depending on the size and complexity of the website. Not cheap, but if it keeps you out of the penalty box and helps you to trump your competitors at the same time, then it’s worth every penny.


Whether you’ve done SEO in the past, or if you’re planning to start doing it soon, an SEO audit can establish your foundation while serving as an early warning system to help you prevent potential penalties from Google down the road. Whatever your situation, if you own a website and SEO is involved, it pays to have an unbiased, expert 3rd party perform an audit to make sure you don’t end up with a lump of Google Penalty coal for Christmas like the folks at Rap Genius.

In unequivocal terms, Cisco CEO John Chambers made clear during a keynote and by an invitation-only media event at CES, the company’s direction is toward IP video and Internet/network-connected everything. At the media event, Chambers and other Cisco executives demonstrated its Videoscape TV services delivery platform. The platform is offered to service providers and media companies to deliver new video services and capabilities to customers.The scenario included new ways of viewing entertainment, with apps as the driving force for controlling the way we view content. In one demo, Cisco engineers showed how a customer could easily “carry” video from room-to-room via the use of a mobile device and smart TV.In another, integration between Web pages and TV channels was demonstrated via a cookware infomercial, where a consumer could pause, rewind, and replay the video, and also view relevant information about the products in the informercial on the Web.Cisco also announced that NBC Universal will use Videoscape for its coverage of the winter Olympics. It will support transcoding and content management for the purpose of allowing NBC to deliver live streaming and on-demand content onsite in Sochi. During his keynote, Chambers speech centered on the concept of the “Internet of Everything, ” which is enabling network and Internet connectivity on everyday objects that are not normally associated with the Web. Chambers had the aid of some guests on stage to help convey his vision of the Internet of Things. Comedienne Sarah Silverman was featured in a video where she got a glimpse of her future self using giant interactive touch screens. They popped up all over her home to do everything from remind her about her appointments to track her bowel movements. (This is Sarah Silverman, after all.)

The Mayor of Barcelona also appeared on-stage with Chambers. Barcelona is one of the rare, if only, large European city, enjoying a budget surplus. The city is partnering with Cisco to become a “smart city.” IP devices, such as network-connected street lamps are helping Barcelona reduce costs on things like energy and waste management. Chambers spoke enthusiastically of a world where everything is automated, IP-enabled, and connected. He touted the benefits of smart shopping carts that would personalize your shopping experience to Internet-connected street lighting to help reduce crime and serve double-duty as electric car chargers. It’s apparent that Cisco is laser-focused on this vision of connected everything. And with good reason, the company needs to restructure after stagnation in sales of network hardware, which has been Cisco’s cash cow.

The Internet of Things was a huge focus for the networking industry and at CES. Everything from wearable tech and smart cars to Internet-connected cookware, lights, baby cams, and more. It’s a trend that is here to stay. But it’s not without critics. Christopher Budd, Trend Micro’s Global Threat Communications Manager, in a blog post, cautioned, “As the Internet of Everything (IoE) approaches, the stakes around privacy and security are getting higher.” He continued, “We’ve seen security flaws enable attackers to hijack webcams on laptops; it’s reasonable to assume that wearables with video capture capabilities will be similarly vulnerable. How can you know who’s watching the video capture from your Google Glass set?”

Even the Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization overseeing wireless standards, released a study which cites concerns about connected everything: “Eighty-four percent of consumers cite concerns about integrating smart technologies into their homes: ease of use and compatibility chief among them,” the study says. Even with concerns about ease of use, security, and compatibility, connected devices are at the forefront of what we want. According to the same study, 91 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase smart products if they are able to synchronize everything with their existing Wi-Fi network. More than half of respondents already have Wi-Fi-enabled household items such as appliances, thermostats or lighting systems.
